Downsized

"Julie Loomis is a very strategic and talented professional organizer. My husband and I moved from a very large home to one half the size and I found myself completely overwhelmed. The moving company basically filled the entire downstairs and a couple of other rooms with boxes up to the ceiling. And I no longer have walk-in closets or built-in shelves to keep everything, so I quickly decided I needed an ‘expert’ who could help me with my ‘ultimate’ downsizing project. I was lucky to find Julie’s website among the many. I chose her because I liked what I read and especially her philosophy of “why spend time with things when there are so many other activities in our lives that have meaning that deserve our time” (paraphrased, of course). So I called her, we met and decided it was a good match. The rest of my story is very exciting.

Over the past couple of months, she helped me purge, arrange, re-think how I use things and how to organize my life (and my husband’s). She suggested, and I embraced, systems that make sense to ME, not to some preset plan with 5 steps and you’re done. She thinks outside the box, she analyzes the layout and the purpose of each room and item. I have truly changed how I view the material things in my space and my life. I gave away much of what I had sitting all those boxes stacked to the ceiling and I realize that has made me much happier.

Our home is now comfortable, organized, and clean. I feel calm and ready to settle into a place that I am proud to bring my children, grandchildren, friends and family over for a visit. We can relax and have fun. Thank you, Julie, for your talents and wisdom and for the fun we have had."

Kitchen Counter/Children’s Artwork

“I was a bit hesitant to show Julie my kitchen.  I was concerned that she would say what others had said, “What a mess!”  I had piles of things to deal with and children’s artwork I didn’t know what to do with.  When we discussed what causes me the most stress, she was able to pinpoint that it was really more of an issue with my children’s artwork (piles in multiple rooms!) than with my to-do piles on the kitchen counter.

She gave me great ideas on how to display the artwork and even involved my 5 year old daughter by empowering her to decide what to display and what has to come down.  That made my daughter feel very important and took the pressure and guilt off of me.  I feel much more calm having a system in place now to manage that once ominous pile of art! As for my to-do piles, she realized it is a process that works for me so the only change made was that now I make sure it stays in one section of counter top.
